About the work

Edmundson is known for his fractured landscapes, of which Spectrum is a memorable example. Almost photographic in its application, this oil-on-canvas piece features a country field in the rich golds of a sunset, but the panes of the picture plane are adjusted just enough to lend the painting an offbeat air, almost as though the viewer is seeing the same scene in multiple realities. The sky undulates between the deeper greys of almost-darkness and the vibrant orange of early evening, a faint full moon already visible high above. A row of trees in backlit shadow extends across the horizon line, the only break allowing a winding, well-trodden path to pass through, disappearing into the bright yellow of the setting sun. Dried grasses are depicted in almost photorealistic detail, rising in tufts across the foreground, concealed in places by mysterious shadows at the bottom of the frame.
