About the work

Gold dominates the depthless space of this encaustic on linen artwork by Timothy McDowell. In Red Bloom, print and paint combine for an interplay of engaging abstraction that welcomes the eye to float up the surface, hovering on the details much like the delicate ink arches hover on the canvas. Hints of florals and intricate scrollwork invite closer scrutiny, the bold greens and blues standing out starkly against the sunset gold wash. The latter’s visible brushstrokes add a painterly touch to a piece that one may easily forget is indeed an artwork  and not a dreamscape from a long forgotten time.

Timothy McDowell has exhibited his work internationally – with gallery representation in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville, Santa Fe, Calgary, Sao Paolo, Kanazawa, Quito, Venice, and Utrecht. He has represented the United States at the 5th Cuenca Biennial of Painting, Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador.

McDowell was born in Texas and spent his formative years regularly visiting family in SOHO, New York City, during the 1960s and 70s. This exposure to active artists, their lofts, family, and friends was quite influential in determining his artistic future. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree in Texas and his master’s degree in fine arts in Tucson from the University of Arizona. In Tucson, he was assigned a fellowship as printer for the PressTime Studio of the Department of Art and oversaw printing sessions with visiting artists. These artists included Lynda Benglis, Robert Irwin, and James Turrell.

Throughout his career, he has juried national exhibitions, selected awards and recipients of artists’ grants, and been a visiting artist to various other institutions and art centers. In 2014-2015, he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Artist Grant for Painting.
