About the work

This striking monumental canvas by renowned American artist Mark Kostabi is a tour de force that unites the main elements of his practice: the shadowy silhouettes of 20th century realism, the uncanniness of surrealism, and the stylish coolness of New York in the 1980s (including Metro Picture Gallery icons such as Robert Longo and Richard Prince). The painting features a backlit central figure, arms up-stretched, within an operatic composition. The surrounding human forms are bending, writing, dancing, and embracing –  their faceless ambiguity evokes the universality of human creativity.

Kostabi was born in 1960 and came to fame during the defining New York Art Scene of the 1980s. His work of universal, faceless figures inhabits surreal worlds. His surrealist inspiration from the greats Gorgio de Chirico and Fernand Leger are evident in his paintings. Kostabi was respected amongst his peers and friends, such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.  He has a niche group of collectors and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery in Washington D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Art LA,  the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
