The impactful, textured scene depicted in Sébire’s Le Bosquet sous la Neige flings the viewer instantly into the windblown snow drifts heaped in this clearing before a wooded grove. A fleeting moment in time, the brisk strokes of the oils feel so visceral that one can almost hear the cries of the birds as they burst into raucous flight, disappearing into the thickly clouded sky and the looming darkness of the trees. So impassioned is Sébire’s depiction of the snow, it seems almost to move with the winds, reminiscent of waves crashing on the shoreline. Though the viewer gazes upon a seemingly desolate landscape, a break in the towering trunks suggests a path out of the wind through the dense protection of the grove, with a view of what could be a dwelling tucked in the safety of the trees.

Gaston Sébire was born in France in 1920. He is best known for his landscapes, seascapes, and floral still lifes. Sébire began painting around the age of 18 and studied art at the Maitrise Sainte Evode in Rouen. After many years of working for the Post Office during the day and painting only at night, he moved to Paris in 1951. Only a year later, the Galerie Visconti played host to the artist’s first exhibition.
In 1953, Sébire was asked to design the costumes and scenery for a ballet choreographed by André Caplet and Gustave Cloëz. The same year, he won two art prizes that enabled him to study and paint abroad. Four years later, he received another award allowing for the continuation of his studies, after which he settled in Normandy. The artist’s career lasted 60 years, during which time his work was shown in many group exhibitions and international shows.
