Though sweeping splashes of colour speak to other works by the artist, Alvarez’s Jessica stands apart, much as each print she develops is individualized by hand-painting after undergoing her silkscreening process. This mixed media work embodies bold organic shapes within a geometric background. Against grey, rich blues, greens, pinks, and yellows all but burst forth, a miniature abstract landscape to which the viewer’s eye is drawn by points of light, rendering this unique artwork constrained but fluid.

Elba Alvarez, born in Pedernales, Venezuela, in 1944, is a celebrated abstract artist whose bold use of colour and texture has garnered international acclaim. After studying in Paris and moving to the United States in 1968, Alvarez developed a distinctive style characterized by striking colours and dynamic compositions that evoke powerful emotions in viewers.
To create her serigraphy prints, she uses a silkscreen process. Each print is hand-pulled in Alvarez’s studio with the help of a master printer and with meticulous attention. Only the finest museum-quality inks and paper are used, and Alvarez supervises the entire process, including hand painting each piece. Her innovative work has been exhibited globally, with successful shows in cities from New York to Honolulu and London to Tokyo. Alvarez’s art has also been sought after by corporate collectors, including IBM, General Motors, and Citicorp. She has received numerous honours, including creating the official posters for the International Art Exposition in New York, a permanent exhibition at Venezuela’s “Gallery de Nacional,” and a touring show across South America, supported by significant corporate sponsorship.
