About the work

In this striking photograph (also held in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada), Herzog captures a moment that is made intriguing by the juxtaposition of the hand-sewn quilted car cover and the weathered concrete, faded paint, and scattered leaves surrounding it. Colourful but muted, the scene is made all the more curious by how suited the car would be to a driveway several decades earlier. A peek of hubcap and headlight is all that is visible beneath its cozy quilt, but the shape speaks to a different era, one perhaps nearer to the lace curtains in the windows and the breeze block-topped concrete wall than the current age.
