Evening Shadows by W.L. Stevenson is a triumph of colour, freedom and expression. The palette of Cézanne and early Matisse are seen in this semi-abstract landscape – the evening sky explodes with lavender and violet brushstrokes and touches of bold orange and lime green animate the surface of the painting with energy and emotion. Stevenson painted in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, and, while his portraits and still lifes are similarly expressive and colourful, his landscapes capture the light, seasons, and diversity of the Canadian wilderness.

William Leroy Stevenson was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1905. He moved to Vancouver in 1930 where he exhibited his work in the annual B.C. Artists shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1946 to 1953. Stevenson befriended Maxwell Bates and his contemporaries and his work was excited and collected throughout western Canada. He died in 1966.
Stevenson’s paintings are deeply modernist in approach and style with references to European modern painting from the 19th and 20th centuries, including symbolism and Fauvism. His subject included still life, florals, and landscapes rendered in thick brushstrokes and his paintings ranged from representational to referential abstraction.
