At first glance, and even second and third, the viewer would be readily forgiven for mistaking Molea’s Aries for a photograph. Such is the technical skill of this Romanian-born painter that no fold, wrinkle, or shadow feels misplaced or ill-conceived in his representation of creamy satin piled on a rich red background. As with many of Molea’s realistic oil on canvas works, Aries finds movement in stillness, the organic in the synthetic, and tremendous depth in two dimensions. The smallest details, like the unironed creases amidst the waves and curves of the fabric, make the viewer almost certain that, should they reach out to touch this imposing piece, they would feel beneath their fingers the soapy softness of the silky inspiration.

Bogdan Molea is a Romanian-born painter known for transforming everyday materials like folded paper and metal into captivating, monumental artworks. Born in Bucharest in 1958, Molea earned multiple academic distinctions in Romania before emigrating to Canada in 1999.
His artistic style is influenced by his passion for late-medieval frescoes and Italian Renaissance art, evident in his precise attention to spatial composition and detail. Molea’s works, such as Arrow, Stairway to Heaven, and Gourds, exhibit a modern approach while retaining the harmony and rigor characteristic of historical masters like Giotto and Piero della Francesca. Often, his detailed paintings present a larger-than-life representation of ordinary objects.
